Getting Inspired With Concept Cars

Every year, it is very exciting to watch numerouscar shows as most automotive companies generally release concept cars during these events.  These concept cars often give us a small peek into the future as most cars on the display show futuristic and quite outrageous designs with incredible technology.

Some companies even sponsor design competition where university students or car designers can submit their ideas and sketches.  It is a great opportunity for car designers to be extremely creative and really let loose.

A lot of cars running today were, in fact, inspired by concept cars.  For instance, Le Sabre from General Motors is a concept vehicle that was designed by Harley Earl in the nineteen fifties.  General Motors used his concept car to introduce the 12-volt electric and the eight-cylinder engine.  Generally, most ideas used are outrageous but some are quite useful and often incorporated in autos that are later made available to the public.

Another famous car inspired by a concept car is the Corvette.  The idea for the Corvette came from a conceptauto called the Chevrolet Corvair Monza back in the 60′s.  Today Pontiac Bonneville is known as a family car, but the original idea was Pontiac’s first two-seater concept showcased in 1954 called the Pontiac Bonneville Special.

Nowadays, mini vans are everywhere, but they used to be unheard of in the 60’s.  The first minivan prototype called the Lancia Megagamma only came out in the 70’s.  One crazy concept car though, was the Nucleon by Ford.  It was a vehicle that was based on nuclear power.  It’s a good thing it did not work out.

The current trend seems to be for vehicles that can serve more than one purpose.  For example, the Bugatti Altess Concept car is not only a tourer but also a racer.  It combines the best of both worlds as it turns from a tourer to a hot rod with just a few quick fixes.  It is almost like a real-life Transformers car.

Lately, many car designers are focused on creating cars for the city, and we see that many futuristic city cars are made to be super small and efficient.  One is by Citroen, which shows the E-3Pod Antistatic concept.  Another concept is from a student designer showing a three-wheel electric car.  It features two smaller wheels at the front, and the driver seats are located at the third wheel at the back.

With overcrowding and too muchtraffic, car companies are looking for ways to solve that problem.  These concept cars may just provide the answer.
