What You Should Know about Auto Dealer’s Service Shops

When you need yourcar fixed, you immediately think about going to the experts, the Service Shop of anauto Dealer. You can have your cars checked, replaced, repaired or even enhanced when you go there. However, you should keep in mind that the system and parts of your car will wear out in the long run and going to the Auto Service Shops will start becoming a vicious cycle.

This topic gives you an idea of the system of an Auto Service Shop, starting from the “front man”. The front man is also called the Service Advisor. His job is to find out about the current condition of your vehicle, will give you an advice and perhaps slide into upselling their services to you. There’s nothing wrong with that, but sometimes, some suggestions or recommendations are just not necessary.

The Upsell Tactic

For example, you went up to the Auto Service Shop solely for an oil change. You will most likely get a recommendation from this front man about other things that your car needs. Most of these dealers will ask you about the miles on your odometer. And if your odometer reads 37,000, the service advisor will recommend what should be done before it reaches 40,000. The “Dealer Recommended” list is focused on services, not major repairs. Some of the services you will hear from them are transmission fluid changes, brake jobs and filters.

Naturally, his or her job is to sell. They get commissions from that. And these services have a wide margin for them. But, it is still up to you, as the owner of the car, to give them the go signal whether your car needs those services or not.

You will often get recommendations from auto dealers about replacing your brake pads way before it’s supposed to be replaced. One way to find out if your brakes are worn down is through the indicators on the pads. If they need to be replaced already, you will be hearing a loud squeal because it simply means that the metal indicator is already making contact with the metal of the rotor.  They will also suggest that you have your rotors resurfaced, which isn’t really necessary, unless you already hear squealing from the pads.

Refer to Your Manual

At this point, you may not be able to listen to your Auto Dealer’s recommendations, nor trust them. At the top of your mind, you are thinking that they just see you as their source of commission, which is somehow true. However, you may always refer to your manual for a genuine advice about your car. It keeps you well informed about your car, and you will be given guidelines as to what should be checked and when it should be checked.  This can save you unnecessary expenses on maintenance, replacements and repairs.
